Telling the hidden stories of Jewish Boyle Heights.
100 years of hidden history, an untraditional exhibit space, 5 days of install, one week of public viewing and the potential for a traveling exhibition. One very tall order. Contracted by the UCLA Leve Center for Jewish Studies and in collaboration with designer (and my wife) Jenna Kush, the challenge seemed an interesting one. The answer was modular wall systems, large scale graphics, movable didactic panels and a printed floor map that could be used in any future iterations. Months of careful planning with the Leve Center curators Saba Soomekh and Caroline Luce helped us transform UCLA’s Royce Hall into an interactive telling of the Jewish history in Boyle Heights. After one week the exhibit was de-installed and rearranged for a semi-permanent home at the Breed Street Shul in Boyle Heights.
