Drawing lines between a prolific painter and the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Alden Mason spent his long career influenced by the light and color of his PNW surrounding. The main objective for my design was to balance Mason’s diverse palette and practice with natural light, referential colors and natural materials. The paint blocks pull from his paintings and are used to identify sectional changes. Floating walls divide the large, hall-like space to create a more intimate experience, while large openings allow for long views and connections between Mason’s varied works. The beams are both structural elements and a way to showcase one the PNW’s greatest natural resources; Douglas fir timber. A separate, drawing room inspired space showcases Mason’s monochromatic drawings and paper works.
